Choosing an Outdoor Sauna for Your NZ Home

A portable tent, a fixed cabin and a trailer sauna ask different things of your space. Start with how you want to use and store your sauna, then compare the heating system and what the kit includes.

Three formats. Different commitments.

Silva’s outdoor wood-fired range uses a pack-away tent and stove. A timber cabin or trailer sauna may suit a different plan. Compare the actual product dimensions and instructions rather than assuming all “portable” saunas work the same way.

01

Portable sauna tent

Choose this format when packing away or moving the enclosure matters. Silva Core, Premium and Ultra use the same wood-fired sauna foundation with different cedar seating inclusions. Allow time to assemble the equipment, manage the fire, cool everything and dry the tent before storage.

02

Fixed sauna cabin

Consider a cabin when you want a dedicated sauna structure and can commit space to it. Check the supplier’s base, delivery access, assembly and installation requirements. Cabin construction alone does not tell you whether its heater uses wood or electricity.

03

Trailer or mobile sauna

A trailer-mounted sauna moves as a larger unit. Compare towing, parking, access and storage requirements with the supplier. It serves a different need from a tent that packs into carry bags.

Measure the usable space, not just the tent.

Silva’s wood-fired enclosure has a 1.8 × 1.8 m footprint and is 2.1 m high. Those are enclosure dimensions, not a complete installation clearance. Check the owner’s manual for the required stove clearances, ground conditions, anchoring and ventilation. Allow room to enter, leave and move around the equipment.

Check the location before choosing the kit.

A flat patch of ground is only the starting point. Consider the surroundings, the stove and chimney, access to the entrance and where the equipment will cool and dry. A deck, balcony or shared outdoor area is not automatically suitable. Confirm the site requirements and any relevant permissions before setting up.

For wood-fired use in New Zealand, check current local fire conditions and restrictions with Fire and Emergency NZ. Use the owner’s manual alongside location-specific guidance; portability is not permission to light a fire anywhere.

Plan the pack-down before the first session.

Think about where the tent, stove, chimney and seating will live between uses. Let the stove and stones cool completely before handling, then dry the enclosure and equipment before storage. Check the bags, component sizes and handling instructions against your transport and storage space.

Same sauna foundation. Your seating choice.

  • CoreCore includes the wood-fired tent and heating essentials. Seating is not included.
  • PremiumPremium adds the two-person foldable cedar bench to the Core foundation.
  • UltraUltra adds the cedar table and bench combination to the Core foundation.

Compare the individual product pages for the full inclusion lists. The optional wood-fired accessory kit is separate from these seating choices.

Considering infrared instead?

An infrared sauna uses electrical heating panels rather than a wood-burning stove. The Silva Box range needs a dry, level location with suitable mains power and electrical components protected from water and weather. A cover does not make electrical parts waterproof. Compare heat sources and placement requirements before deciding.
